Physical geography field trip through Mexico

03/31/2025

At the end of March 2025, a two-week field trip through Mexico took place as part of a major physical geography excursion organised by the Institute of Geography and Geology at JMU in cooperation with the Institute of Geology at UNAM (Mexico).

The excursion, led by Prof. Dr. Birgit Terhorst (JMU) and Dr. Elizabeth Solleiro-Rebolledo (UNAM), took participants from Mexico City through various geozones to the coast near Veracruz. At the National Earth Science School (ENCiT) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City, the Würzburg students had the opportunity to present poster contributions on various physical and human geography topics. The students' intensive, technical preparation on the topics enabled in-depth discussions and a bilateral exchange with the students, graduates and lecturers at UNAM.
In addition to geoarchaeological topics and visits to many archaeological sites, geology, climate, vegetation and ecology, the focus of the excursion was primarily on the soils of Mexico. The practical, pedological approach to soil profiles was one of the essential core contents. The students had the opportunity to discuss the pedological processes that characterised the soils in the field and to discuss them with the lecturers. In addition to a bilateral exchange with Mexican scientists, further skills were acquired in the field.
