The international workshop "Geoarchaeology of the Nile Delta: Current research and future perspectives" will be held from November 29 to 30, 2019 at the University of Würzburg, organized by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julia Meister (Physical Geography) and Dr. Eva Lange Athinodorou (Egyptology). In order to investigate human-environmental interactions in the Nile Delta, the workshop will focus on the following topics:

  • Sediment analyses (e.g. geochemistry, microfossils, dating) to understand landscape dynamics in the vicinity of archaeological sites
  • Archaeological surveys; spatial analyses using geographical information systems, remote sensing data, historical maps and geophysical prospection
  • Reconstruction of the Holocene landscape development in the Nile delta (e.g. Nile branches)
  • Interactions between fluvial dynamics of the Nile, Holocene landscape development and settlement history
  • Reconstruction of local water management systems (e.g. canals, lakes)
