Experimental sandbox at the Chair of Geomorphology
07/31/2024The Chair of Geomorphology has recently set up an experimental sandbox. The sandbox enables the simulation of small river courses and thus the practical study of fluvial processes and landforms.
Since summer 2024, the Chair of Geomorphology has had an experimental sandbox. This sandbox makes it possible to recreate small river courses and study fluvial landforms and processes. The resulting surfaces are recorded directly with a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) or photogrammetrically. The data is then used to calculate digital elevation models (DEMs) and create sediment balances. The experimental sandbox makes it possible to study processes and methods experimentally before they are then analysed in real landscapes. The sandbox is an excellent addition to the physical geography curriculum. We would like to thank Mr Moritz from the Chair of Geomorphology and the technical department of the University of Würzburg for constructing the sandbox.
