Regional Economic Effects of Tourism in the Wadden Sea National Parks of Hamburg and Lower Saxony

  • Funding: Hamburg and Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park Authorities
  • Duration: 12/2018 – 03/2021
  • Leading researcher: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hubert Job

The Wadden Sea is in many respects a unique region in Germany: From a nature conservation point of view, with its outstanding flora and fauna, it can undoubtedly be described as an international highlight. This is confirmed by appropriate measures of nature conservation, so that three Wadden Sea National Parks are also a part of surrounding biosphere reserves and the entire region is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the same time, this uniqueness has been attracting a large number of tourists to the Wadden Sea for a long time and a variety of reasons. On the one hand, therefore, it seems interesting to see how much the aforementioned nature conservation measures ultimately contribute to visitors' travel decisions. On the other hand, the economic significance of tourism for the region is of interest with special focus on the share of nature conservation-based tourism. The present study examines these facts for the two national parks Hamburg Wadden Sea and Lower Saxony Wadden Sea. For the latter it seems also to be valuable because a methodologically comparable study was carried out in 2007 and the tourism developments that have occurred since then can be analysed.

Local and Bavarian Acceptance of national park Bayrischer Wald

Funding: Bavarian Forest National Park Authority
Duration: 06/2017 – 09/2018
Leading researcher: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hubert Job

The designation of protected areas is one of the most effective instruments of nature conservation policy to adequately meet the concerns of nature conservation. As a category of different protected areas, National Parks pursue the objective of ensuring that natural processes take place as undisturbed as possible in their natural dynamics in the predominant part of their territory. In addition, they are to serve scientific environmental observation, natural history education and the natural experience of the population. Whether the designation of National Parks can be regarded as a successful measure depends decisively on the acceptance of the local population and the country as a whole. The two research projects are investigating the acceptance of the Bavarian Forest and Berchtesgaden National Parks - almost 50 and 40 years respectively after their designation. In this way, the possible changes in the environmental perception of the population in the course of time since their establishment and in comparison to earlier studies can also be shown.
