Matthias Naumann is the chair of human geography at Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg since 1 August 2025. Prior to his appointment at JMU, he held professorships in Bonn and Klagenfurt and was a interim professor in Dresden.

Matthias Naumann was also a research assistant and lecturer at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, the Freie Universität Berlin, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the University of Potsdam and the University of Hamburg. Furthermore, he worked at research institutions in Berlin, Cottbus and Erkner.

Matthias Naumann studied geography, sociology and European ethnology at Humboldt University in Berlin. He completed his doctorate at the University of Potsdam.
