Presentation "Wasserwandel" in the shop "Weltladen Würzburg"

10/05/2023

At the end of the exhibition "Water Change" in the Weltladen Würzburg, Dr. Daniel Abel was invited as a speaker to present the change in water availability as a consequence of climate change. The talk entitled "Water change - global, regional and local perspective" highlighted the occurrence of droughts and heavy precipitation in the past and - assuming different greenhouse gas scenarios - in the future.

Examples were given of various recent extreme events, such as multi-year droughts in Europe (2018-2020) and at the Horn of Africa (2021-2022), heat summers in Germany (2003, 2018), and heavy precipitation events as in the Ahr Valley (2021), Pakistan (2022), and Greece and Libya (2023). The role of climate change in the more frequent and increasingly intense occurrence of such extreme events was then explained. Finally, different mitigation and adaptation measures were presented and a detailed recommendation list of further reading was provided for interested audience members.
