Lecture Series 2024 Geographic Society Würzburg: Lecture by Dr. Tatiana Lopez-Julies
04/24/2024On April 22, 2024, Dr. Tatiana Lopez-Julies delivered a lecture titled "Saure Trauben - Lokale Gewerkschaftskämpfe und transnationale Solidarität in der südafrikanischen Weinindustrie" ["Sour Grapes - Local Union Struggles and Transnational Solidarity in the South African Wine Industry"] as part of the 2024 lecture series of the Geographic Society Würzburg e.V. (GGW).
In her presentation, Tatiana López examined current structures and mechanisms of exploitation within the South African wine industry, which are closely intertwined with the country's colonial history and apartheid regime. She also provided insights into the ongoing struggles of local unions for dignified working conditions, which increasingly involve international engagement with buyer companies in consumer countries. A central focus of her talk was on transnational alliances between South African unions and unions from Sweden and Germany, the two largest export markets for South African wine.
