The scientific interest focused on economic and social geography as well as the historical-genetic development of cultural landscapes. Starting in 1967, an investigation of the Mediterranean agricultural and economic region around the Gulf of Naples was begun, which was regularly continued during work at the Würzburg Institute. Within the framework of the “Africa Map Project” of the German Research Foundation (DFG), publications on settlement and population development in Algeria and Tunisia were produced from 1970 onwards. Detailed mappings of retail trade in the Medina of Tunis carried out in 1969 and again in 1989 revealed its rapid changes in use. Until 1997, DFG-funded studies were also conducted on the industrial development of the Greater Tunis area (Dipl. Geogr. Walter Englert). As early as 1981, a textbook was published as an introduction to economic geography with the guiding objective of regional economic analysis (Westermann-Verlag), appearing in three editions up to 1998. The methodological goal of economic geography was defined as the analysis of “economic regions,” which are characterized by differentiated spatial boundaries and processual transformations (e.g. Economic Region Maintal, WiR Halle-Leipzig-Merseburg, WiR Donbas). This spatially complex approach was later partly critically assessed in geographic scholarly circles but found broad resonance in regional planning practice.
In West Africa, through cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, studies were carried out in Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Sierra Leone on the effects of highway construction as a development impulse for surrounding traditional economic regions. This was followed by a DFG project in Senegal initiated by my colleague Helmut Geist: food crops (maize, millet) versus cash crops. For teaching purposes, the lecture “West Africa” was continuously expanded. An early interest also arose in the regional economic development of the USSR (supported by Russian language skills acquired in youth). Participation in a DFG-initiated academic exchange with the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Kiev, Moscow, Irkutsk, and Bratsk provided collegial contacts and field experience, later expanded by further stays in the Caucasus and Caspian regions (also with student excursions). This formed the basis for the repeatedly offered lecture on the economic geography of the USSR.
Within applied economic geography, and closely tied to teaching (seminars, theses, diploma research), studies were conducted on the historical and regional economic development of retail trade and businesses in districts of Würzburg. In cooperation with regional planning agencies (Regional Government of Lower Franconia, Würzburg City Planning, Office for Rural Development), historical-geographical studies of Lower Franconian economic regions emerged, such as Maintal, the Rhön, and the Spessart uplands. Membership in the Regional Planning Association of Würzburg Planning Region 2 and in the Bavarian Working Group of the Academy for Spatial Research in Hanover proved helpful. Many of these regional studies were carried out with my longtime colleague Prof. Dr. Ulrich Ante, who especially researched questions of regional and city marketing as well as the impact of the then-new technology and start-up centers. In 1988, the chair participated in an assessment of the economic structure of the border area with the GDR and CSSR for the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs immediately prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain. These studies resulted in an evaluation of potential developments, opportunities, and risks for the future of the Mainfranken economic region.
Participation in a 12-year doctoral program of the Faculty of Geography in Namibia brought insights into the regional-economic and political transformations of a former colonial territory. Here, historical family ties to emigrants before World War I and related knowledge of the country were also beneficial. Within this program, my colleague Dipl.-Geogr. Steffen Niemann completed his dissertation on the historical use of limited water resources.
The long-standing interest in the Mediterranean region, ongoing since my habilitation, led from 1975 onwards to a total of 14 independent regional research projects funded by the DFG. These were complemented by excursions with colleagues and students (Mezzogiorno, Spain, Tunisia, Morocco). This laid the groundwork for the book “Mediterranean Region,” published by the Scientific Book Society in 2001, with a second edition in 2011.
After beginning retirement in autumn 2000, less-studied destinations became the focus, especially countries of the Near and Middle East, including its crisis regions. Another return destination was Svalbard, which I had become familiar with during the 1960 Spitsbergen expedition of the Würzburg Geography Institute (climatological observations of what was then a very warm summer). Prompted by numerous requests, a wide range of lectures were given on the areas studied since the beginning of my academic career. These retrospectives led to long-term documentation of changes in previously studied regions. Thus, the topic of my dissertation on soil erosion in the Tauber Valley was revisited through comparison of former damage sites with their current condition. This approximately 50-year comparison (1960–2015) appeared in 2018 as Volume 88 of the Würzburg Geographical Manuscripts and is freely available online. Similarly, the agricultural landscape analysis around the Gulf of Naples, begun in the mid-1960s and extended through many later visits, was continued up to the present, focusing on causes and progress of land-use competition through urbanization and commerce. This work was published as a book by Herder Verlag in Freiburg and, as Volume 90, also in the Würzburg Geographical Manuscripts in 2024, including extensive maps, surveys, aerial and satellite images. Parallel to these retirement projects, together with Helga Wagner, an effort was made to capture the major changes in agricultural use and food resources as a result of industrialization through the first land consolidations in the 19th century, using two villages in southern Lower Saxony as examples. This was published in 2016 as Volume 84 of the Würzburg Geographical Manuscripts.
