Natural hazards in high mountains – 3D model of the Blaueis valley

Summary

Climate change is increasing the risk of natural hazards in high mountain regions. In particular, rockfalls and landslides are becoming more frequent. In order to gain a better understanding of these processes, the University of Würzburg created a high-resolution 3D model of the Blaueistal valley in the Berchtesgaden Alps in summer 2025. With over five billion laser measurement points, the model accurately depicts the valley floor and steep rock faces. Future measurements will reveal where the landscape is changing and which areas are most at risk.
