Completed project study on "eBay Deine Stadt"

10/10/2023

As part of the project study "eBay Deine Stadt" (eBay Your City), conducted under the direction of Dr. Sina Hardaker (Chair of Economic Geography) and Dr. Alexandra Appel (IKEM Berlin), the marketplaces eBay Deine Stadt, initiated by eBay in Germany and declared as local, were investigated. Urban actors were interviewed and participating retailers were surveyed.

eBay Deine Stadt

In many places, local online marketplaces are being launched in order to better position inner-city retailers digitally against the backdrop of structural change, which has been intensified due to corona.

In this context, stationary retailers are increasingly coming into the focus of established platforms such as Amazon and Google, which want to attract retailers to their platform and contribute to their digitization. This also applies to the trading platform eBay, which was founded in California in 1995. In Germany, eBay wants to cooperate with cities and regions through an external consulting firm and win over (inner-)city retailers in particular for the eBay Deine Stadt marketplaces, which eBay has initiated and declared to be local.

The project study "eBay Deine Stadt" - conducted under the leadership of Dr. Sina Hardaker (Chair of Economic Geography) and Dr. Alexandra Appel (IKEM Berlin) - is based on 20 qualitative expert interviews with municipal actors and the consulting firm commissioned by eBay, as well as a quantitative standardized survey of 92 retailers registered on the eBay Deine Stadt platform and answers the following research questions, among others:

  • How does collaboration between eBay and urban stakeholders occur?
  • How does the introduction of the LOM eBay Your City proceed?
  • What role does eBay play in this process?
  • How do the urban actors evaluate the cooperation with eBay?
