During a six-week research visit to New Zealand in February/March 2026, Associate Professor Dr Stefan Winkler from the Chair of Geomorphology at JMU Würzburg attended the 11th IAG International Conference on Geomorphology in Christchurch. In addition to conducting his own fieldwork in the Southern Alps in the Aoraki/Mt Cook area, he also supervised a student project together with colleagues from the Universitiy of Canterbury. In recognition of this long-standing collaboration, he was appointed Adjunct Professor at the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.

Dr. Janek Walk, together with Dr. Philipp Marr and tutor Hannah Andlinger, received the Univie Teaching Award from the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy at the University of Vienna in June.

On 25 June 2025 at 16:30 there will be an information event in room 222 in the Institute of Geographie and Geology on the new Master GEOSPHERES - Geographic Science Approaches to Environmental Challenges. The event is open to all interested students!

The inaugural lecture by Prof. Dr Georg Stauch from the Chair of Geomorphology at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg took place on 23 April. The title of the lecture was ‘Geomorphology in the Anthropocene’

The geomorphology team is delighted to have been accepted for the project proposal 'GEO-XR: XR for geographical spatial analyses'. The project is led by Dr C. Büdel and Dr A. Tintrup gen. Suntrup.

The Chair of Geomorphology has recently set up an experimental sandbox. The sandbox enables the simulation of small river courses and thus the practical study of fluvial processes and landforms.

Prof. Dr. Julia Meister receives the 'Science Award for Physical Geography 2023' of the Prof. Dr. Frithjof Voss Foundation.

PD Dr. Georg Stauch hat den Ruf auf die W3-Professur „Geomorphologie“ an der JMU Würzburg angenommen. Der Physische Geograph forschte bislang am Lehrstuhl für Physische Geographie und Geoökologie der RWTH Aachen und wird zum 1. April 2024 an die Universität Würzburg wechseln.
